No one understands this better than one in a situation we all are grappling with - the pandemic. While we have a tendency to adopt a myopic scope of vision on this, i sincerely urge you to step back and look at the bigger picture. To cite an example, remember how people were losing their jobs early April because several companies were on a firing spree? The very same companies are now on a hiring spree and one would have never known this if we did not have the patience to stick around.
As humans we are bestowed with the ability to think. While this capability should suffice to make us feel special, very often we use it to our disadvantage.
How?
We overthink.
We visualise the worst outcome.
We brood over our past.
We worry about our future.
Plants & other animals do not question their motive of existence. A seed germinates and grows into a plant. The leaves synthesise sunlight & chlorophyll to create food whilst consuming carbon dioxide & expelling oxygen. Some plants bear fruits and some don’t. Eventually they procreate or die out. The same applies to other animals besides us.
Do you think they would contemplate the answers to questions like what is the meaning of life? Where is my career headed? Am i happy?
The point being, why can’t we just exist like them. Do we have to complicate everything?
Yes, times are uncertain and there is absolutely no clarity on how our future will unfold. But as long as we have a roof over our head, food on our plates and the assurity that our loved ones are safe do we really need to fret over trivial things like not being able to socialise or travel?
I feel the bigger picture is lost out on by many.
I read somewhere that when you drive a car you do not need to see the entire path to the destination - just the path which is illuminated by the headlights suffices. In a similar fashion can’t we live this pandemic a day at a time and not fret over future of our existence?
On a concluding note the next time you are faced with a situation that causes your mind to spiral out of control, take a pause and remind yourself - is the anxiety necessary?
